URBAN SPRAWL 03/07
DESCRIPTION »
“Urban Sprawl” is a visual anthology that captures the eclectic essence of San Francisco, drawn from my experiences and observations upon first moving to the city. Opting for the 35mm stills option in my Cinematography 1 assignment, I sought to document the city’s myriad facets—its weirdness, oddity, terror, and uncanny resemblance to New York, albeit through a more psychedelic lens. The collection ranges from obscure and odd to outright humorous, presenting a tapestry of moments that collectively offer a surreal portrait of San Francisco.
APPROACH »
My approach was to immerse myself in the streets of San Francisco, camera in hand, allowing the city’s vibrant energy to guide my exploration. Each photograph was taken with the intention of capturing a story, a slice of life that when pieced together, forms a narrative as diverse as the city itself. I embraced the unpredictability of 35mm film, its grain and texture adding depth and a sense of timelessness to the images. This choice of medium, coupled with the candid nature of street photography, allowed me to encapsulate the raw, unfiltered essence of San Francisco.
